Public Lecture: ‘Managing diversity in junior sport: the tension between participation and talent identification’

Whether it’s within the workplace or on the sporting field, ‘diversity’ involves managing talent. In this public lecture, TASA member Professor Karen Farquharson will explore how community-based junior sports clubs balance the desire to provide participation opportunities for children and the imperative to win. Drawing from ‘Participation versus performance: Managing (dis)ability, gender and cultural diversity in junior sport’ research project, she will argue that participation and performance can be viewed as competing ideologies and that approaches taken to balance them have material consequences for how clubs manage other forms of diversity.
