TASA Thursday Post Grad: Beyond the Thesis: Navigating Opportunities After Your PhD
About this event

Transitioning from PhD research into the next stage of your academic and professional career can feel both exciting and uncertain. This session brings together two accomplished academics to explore diverse pathways available post-PhD.
Our first speaker, Dr Laura Davy, a DECRA Research Fellow (ANU), will share insights into securing competitive fellowships, building an independent research profile, and navigating early-career academic roles. The second speaker, Dr Evangeline Aguas, a Senior Lecturer (UTS), will discuss strategies for publishing, and the process of transforming your doctoral thesis into a published monograph, in light of her recent book, Queer Interruptions: Temporality in Femslash Fandom (2025, Palgrave Macmillan).
Participants will gain practical guidance on identifying and pursuing postdoctoral fellowships, academic positions, and publication opportunities. The session will also address challenges often faced in early post-PhD careers, including balancing research, teaching, and professional development. Designed for current PhD candidates and recent graduates, this interactive session will combine short presentations with Q&A, allowing attendees to ask questions specific to their career goals. By the end, participants will leave with actionable strategies, inspiration, and a clearer sense of the opportunities available beyond the PhD.
