About this event

Join us for a dynamic panel discussion exploring how sociologists can move beyond the academic sphere and apply their work in practical, applied ways.
Our panelists - Dr Laetitia Coles and Dr Zoe Staines will reflect on the benefits of stepping outside the academic bubble, share insights on using media and social media to amplify research, and offer practical advice on how to engage with communities and industry.
We’ll also dive into the challenges of applied work, with time for audience questions.

Laetitia Coles
Laetitia Coles is an applied mixed-methods sociologist at the Queensland Brain Institute, The University of Queensland. Her research spans the fields of sociology, psychology, education, and health. Laetitia’s research focuses on how child-focused workforces and families interact with social, health, and education systems. Laetitia is particularly interested in understanding the experiences of children with disability and their families and caregivers, to direct research focus to areas of most need. Laetitia has extensive experience managing large-scale research projects, working in multi-disciplinary research groups, and in research translation.
Zoe Staines
Zoe Staines is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Science at The University of Queensland. Her research is deeply interdisciplinary, critically examining social policy, gender and work, welfare conditionality, coloniality, and rural/remote crime and governance, with a central focus on addressing structural injustice. Before entering academia, she held senior research and policy roles in government and the not-for-profit sector. She is currently Co-Editor-In-Chief of the Australian Journal of Social Issues (Q1).
