February 2021

Hello everyone,

Hope you are well

Summary of February virtual meeting

  • We chatted about our TG's aim this year, briefly :  a) having opportunities to share and learn from and support other applied sociologist (and/or those interested/thinking of becoming applied sociologist!) and b) sprooking the word and boosting the profile of applied sociology more broadly - to other sociologists and the wider community.
  • To do a) and strategise for b), we agreed to continue these monthly informal meetings. Anyone and everyone is welcome. I've planned out some meetings times below across some different days so hopefully one or more will suit you. Always happy for new people to join - remember you can participate as much or as little as you like.
  • Another suggestion was to start a seminar series - more in the section below.
  • Many of our brainstormed activities did not require additional funding so we won't be applying for additional TASA TG funds this round - but there are other rounds later this year if we do come up with something.
  • There was support for a face-to-face event to tag onto TASA 2021 or ISA 2022 (Melbourne) conferences - time will tell if these will be face-to-face...
  • We also discussed that ISA (International Sociological Association) does not have an Applied Sociology group but there are likely many Applied Sociologists lurking in other topic areas. We thought might be a good opportunity to hold an applied sociology side-event to ISA 2022 Melbourne. Keen to hear your thoughts about this :)
  • Another way to profile examples of ways people go about doing applied sociology included planning a social media campaign alongside another social media campaign such as Antipoverty week and other key events in the social media calender. If anyone knows of or would like to assist with this type of thing, please let me know :)
  • We also talked about it being great to link non-for-profit organisations with researchers and/or research capacity building for non-for-profits (e.g. evaluation designs, designing interventions for impact etc).
  • Lots of great ideas, looks of opportunities for you to join in on any of these that sounds interesting!

Applied Sociology Seminar series
Members suggested we start a (bi-?)monthly seminar series showcasing our members work (applied sociology in action!). Peta Cook has put up her hand to present her award-winning work later in the year and I am looking for others who might be interested in presenting. I'm thinking a 20mins presentation followed by a Q and A discussion might work well? The seminar would be open to thematic group members but also TASA members more widely. Should the presenter consent, these could also be recorded and posted on the TASA website and shared/open to the broader public. Please email me if you would like to present! At the risk of seeming self-promoting, I thought I might get the ball rolling and start first? Free feel to suggest another speaker and/or someone for March.
  • Presenter Dr Sophie Hickey
