Introducing your new convenors

Hi everyone

Rose Stambe and Shannon Harvey are pleased to introduce ourselves as your new Applied Sociology Thematic Group co-convenors. We also want to say a huge thank you to our outgoing convenor, Sophie Hickey, for her excellent convening over the past two years, most notably in nurturing connection through the pandemic.

Dr Rose Stambe (she/her) is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Queensland.  Her area of expertise lies in ethnography, particularly with marginalised communities facing social and economic exclusion. Rose’s research investigates how policies, institutions, and wider systems shape the lives of marginalised individuals, informing strategies for greater social justice.  Rose works closely with NGOs and industry researchers.

Shannon Harvey (they/them) is a doctoral candidate at UNSW Sydney, exploring non-binary people’s experiences of family violence services. They are also Director, Impact Data & Evaluation at The Benevolent Society, based on Gadigal land in Sydney. Shannon has worked as a researcher and advocate in community services in the UK, USA and Australia for nearly 20 years, focused primarily on gender-based violence, homelessness and mental health.

Get yourself into our next newsletter

We plan to send the next quarterly newsletter out in September, so if you have anything you’d like us to include, email shannon.harvey@unsw.edu.au and r.stambe@uq.edu.au. We’re keen to include members’ applied sociology publications, resources, events, job opportunities and more! And if you have something that can’t wait for the newsletter, send it over and we’re happy to share it as a one-off email.

We’re looking forward to getting to know you all over the next couple of years.
