About this event
Grazyna will be speaking from the perspective of the faculty’s low risk ethics chair, but also a member of the university Human Research Ethics Committees. In particular Grazyna will discuss the difficulties of trying to navigate the National Health & Medical Research Council's National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research that was updated to specifically refer to the use of secondary data and its implications for social media research. We are bound to work within these guidelines and it is a difficult process to manoeuvre.
Kerry conducted a study on art teachers on Twitter over a period of six months and wrote about the process of applying for ethical clearance from their university. It was very difficult to get approval from Twitter to use data in their study (which was necessary to get ethical clearance from their university), so they needed to write to the business section of Twitter at the time and received approval that way. Further to that, they discussed ethical issues that are particular to social media and virtual research using Barad's theoretical model of diffraction: Power, K. (2019). Ethical problems in virtual research: Enmeshing the blurriness with Twitter data. E-Learning and Digital Media, 16(3), 196–207.
