Members' Engaging Sociology

Rob Cover, Ashleigh Haw & Jay Daniel Thompson (2022). Fake News in Digital Cultures: Technology, Populism and Digital Misinformation. Bingley, UK: Emerald Publishing.

Fake News
Fake News in Digital Cultures presents a new approach to understanding disinformation and misinformation in contemporary digital communication, arguing that fake news is not an alien phenomenon undertaken by bad actors, but a logical outcome of contemporary digital and popular culture, conceptual changes meaning and truth, and shifts in the social practice of trust, attitude and creativity.

Looking not to the problems of the present era but towards the continuing development of a future digital media ecology, the authors explore the emergence of practices of deliberate disinformation. This includes the circulation of misleading content or misinformation, the development of new technological applications such as the deepfake, and how they intersect with conspiracy theories, populism, global crises, popular disenfranchisement, and new practices of regulating misleading content and promoting new media and digital literacies. Read on...

Returning Convener

This week, we are introducing you to the convener of the Media Thematic Group.

The Media thematic group was established in 2005.  The group aims to encourage, develop and support research, teaching, public engagement and collaboration in the field of media. Media is increasingly central to all dimensions of contemporary societies, and the media itself is an increasingly significant site for sociological research and teaching. Building on a diverse range of theoretical and empirical approaches, sociology has provided important insights into all aspects of the media, including media production, content, and reception, and interactions between media and society. As media continues to develop in rapid and diverse ways, crucial challenges continue to emerge for sociologists in researching, teaching and engaging the media. The thematic group on media will explore the changing social significance of all forms of media and communications industries, and provide a forum in which researchers interested in the media can come together to meet, exchange ideas and resources, and explore and develop research collaborations. Preliminary points of focus for the group include, but are not limited to:
  • Media production, content and reception
  • Theoretical and methodological debates
  • Digital media and public participation
  • Locating media within its societal context, including law, politics, economy and culture
  • Innovative teaching practices about, and with, digital media
  • Public engagement with media

The returning convener is Ricki Spencer

Ricki Spencer
Ricki Spencer is a non-binary person, teacher and researcher, who advocates for safe spaces and best practice policies for queer and gender diverse students and teachers. Ricki is currently studying their masters of education at the University of Melbourne. They have produced many videos for TASA's YouTube Channel in the Media Voices series.
