| Academic legacies: sociological lives then and now | TASA member Professor Fran Collyer and UK researcher Graham Crow (Emeritus Professor of Sociology and Methodology) will be presenting their research on retired academics. Fran's focus will be on sociologists' reflections of what sociology was like in the 1960s to 1980s in Australia and Graham's focus will be on what people in his study think they are leaving for colleagues in the next generation.

| | Career Development Grants | The new Career Development Grant has been developed by Heidi Hetz, the Equity and Inclusion Portfolio Leader. The grant seeks to support the career development activities of TASA members where these activities are not covered by other funding. Applications close on May 20.

| TASA bestows several annual awards and four of them are currently open for nominations. Namely:
- Distinguished Service to Australian Sociology Award;
- Outstanding Service to TASA Award;
- Sociology in Action Award; and
- Teaching Sociology Award.

| This week, we are introducing you to the conveners of the Social Theory Thematic Group
(TG).
TASA's Social Theory Thematic Group provides a forum for the discussion and development of social theory. It welcomes systematic and critical reflection on the human condition in society and the changing complexion of modernity. From Critical Theory to phenomenology, from meta-theory to hermeneutics and beyond, TASA Social Theory embraces a pluralistic approach to the elucidation of the social world.
TASA Social Theory invites new interventions into long standing debates on, for example, the macro and micro, action and system, or power and culture; it fosters dialogue between classical and contemporary social theory; promotes theoretical responses to current issues and debates; and welcomes social theoretical innovation.
Drawing on the rich traditions of social theory in Australia, TASA Social Theory embodies an institutional context in which sociology interfaces with theoretical debates in the human sciences, more generally. Through rigorous dialogue, conceptual analysis and theoretical debates, TASA Social Theory builds disciplinary grounding within an interdisciplinary context. TASA Social Theory contributes to the development of imaginative and robust social theoretical frameworks that address the central problematics of our contemporary world.

|  | | Rachel is a Senior Lecturer (Sociology) at the Australian Catholic University, Melbourne. A political sociologist who specialises in cultural politics, she works primarily in social and political theory with particular interests in nationalism, postcolonialism, multiculturalism and urban studies. Her work has been published in leading international journals like Theory, Culture and Society, Political Studies, Political Geography, Urban Affairs Review and Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies. Rachel's first book, Multicultural Politics of Recognition and Postcolonial Citizenship: Rethinking the Nation (Routledge, 2018), was published as part of the 'Postcolonial Politics' series and argues that ideas of nation are an important resource for minority groups demanding to be recognised. Her second book co-authored with Mark Chou, How Local Governments Govern Culture War Conflicts (Cambridge University Press, 2020), advances theories of how cultural conflict shapes local governance focusing on the January 26 controversy. She currently has a third book, Postcolonialism and Political Theory, under contract with Polity Press. Rachel is also an Editor of Thesis Eleven: Critical Theory and Historical Sociology (Sage).
|  | | Nick Osbaldiston is a senior lecturer at James Cook University in Cairns. His work is predominantly in the area of internal migration with emphasis on counter-urban trends in Australia. He also works in place-based studies and has recently published a book ‘Towards a Sociology of the Coast’ with Palgrave Macmillan. Nick also co-edited a book with Fabian Cannizzo in 2019 called the ‘Social Structures of Global Academia’. He has been a thematic group convenor (Cultural Sociology) and executive committee member for TASA, along with co-convening a conference in 2013 at Monash University. | | |

The Migration, Ethnicity and Multiculturalism (MEM) postgraduate team is currently made up of 4 representatives that love being a part of the team. However, with some of the team growing and pushing out both PhD thesis' and real human babies in next 6 months (one of which has already done so!) we are seeking expressions of interest from candidates who might like to join the team and transition into this new role. This is a great opportunity to become more involved with the MEM thematic group, TASA’s largest thematic group, and extend your professional network!
