Subject: TASA members newsletter: June 2
From: TASA

Dear ~~first_name~~,

We hope you can join us for our TASA Thursdays event TODAY, Thursday June 2nd. Fellow member Tom Barnes is hosting The Future of Work: Challenges of Regulation for the Albanese Labor Government (see event blurb below). Speakers include A/Prof Elizabeth Hill, Political Economy, University of Sydney – on work, gender and the care economy, fellow member Dr Elizabeth Humphrys, UTS – on work, climate change and heat stress and Alison Pennington, Senior Economist, Centre for Future Work – on the case for collective bargaining reform. Zoom access details:

Among many issues, Labor’s victory in the Federal Election raises the future of work, and the regulation of work and employment, as central points of contention in terms of politics and policy. The ongoing socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, rising living costs and falling real wages are related problems that confront the new government. This forum brings together experts to address different regulatory dimensions and challenges of work, including gender inequality and the regulation of the care economy, climate change and heat stress in workplaces, and the case for a new system of collective bargaining ‘with Australian characteristics’. Each expert will outline key issues and problems in these areas as well as key challenges facing government at the beginning of this new chapter in Australian politics.

Thematic Groups

Returning and Incoming Conveners

This week, we are introducing you to the conveners of the Applied Sociology Thematic Group
(TG).

The Applied Sociology Thematic Group aims to create a supportive network for applied social researchers working in non-academic positions, and to increase visibility of their research projects, activities and achievements. Applied sociologists are employed in diverse contexts, including (but not limited to): consultancy and private industry, government and non-government organisations, and other contract work. Applied sociology has a focus on practical applications of sociological knowledge with a view to providing improved outcomes for different groups of people. This research is often conducted within a multidisciplinary environment and in collaboration with different organisations, including community services, activist groups and universities. Members are involved in dynamic research projects, including policy development, community advocacy, project management, and social welfare.

The Applied Sociology Thematic Group is committed to enhancing understanding of the challenges that their members face in their everyday working environments and in negotiating their career trajectories. The Group’s objectives are:
  • To raise the public profile of applied sociological research within TASA, academia and the wider public
  • To support sociology graduates and to develop an agenda for career opportunities outside of academia
  • To provide a basis for streams on applied sociology at TASA conferences
  • To organise workshops, seminars, conferences, lectures and other research activities on topics related to applied sociological research, with a sensitivity to the funding, geographic and time constraints of members’ working lives
  • To encourage publications that address the issues encountered by sociologists working outside academia
  • To nurture relationships with other interdisciplinary groups and organisations
The conveners are Sophie Hickey (2nd term) and Catherine Hastings

TASA Publications
Dr Sophie Hickey is a mixed-methods health service researcher at the Molly Wardaguga Research Centre, Charles Darwin University. She currently manages a large longitudinal cohort study of First Nations mothers and children designed to provide feedback to local service providers on best practice maternity care, that has seen a profound reduction in preterm birth for women accessing the new model of care. As an applied sociologist, Sophie works in a diverse multidisciplinary team and uses institutional ethnography, participatory action research and implementation science to improve health services for and with First Nations people.
Catherine is a Research Fellow in the Law School at Macquarie University. Her current sociologically informed research investigates how, why and in what context types of legal needs develop within marginalised and disadvantaged populations in Australia. Other recent projects have included the causes of homelessness for families and older women, international student financial and housing precarity, and critical realist methodology. In addition to her academic work, for the past 12 years she has undertaken applied social research and evaluation projects for government and not for profit organisations.

Call for Participants

Online Child Sexual Exploitation (OCSE) Research Project
This study involves collecting data from not only offenders but also individuals who haven’t been charged with any type of sexual offending against children, and the benefits are hoped to be at least twofold. It is hoped that the results will contribute to enhancing the early detection of online child sexual offenders through revealing potential risk factors associated with this type of offending. And due to current risk assessment and therapeutic interventions being geared more toward contact offenders (and thus sometimes not overly effective) the research will hopefully contribute to enhancing risk assessment practices and therapeutic frameworks designed to target a reduction of offending and recidivism in this area.
