| | | | Charles Crothers passed away on 13th August, at the age of 75. Charles was not just known for his work and support of New Zealand sociology, but worked on the international scene throughout his long career. He had suffered from cancer for a long while, and it finally took its toll. He died peacefully surrounded by his family in New Zealand. At the recent World Congress, fellow member Fran Collyer was fortunate to be able to present him with the Robert K Merton Award, and be part of that celebration of his contribution to the sociology of science and the history of sociology. Charles will be sadly missed by many in New Zealand, Australia and indeed across the world.

| | | Norman K. Denzin, Ph.D., 82, of Urbana passed away peacefully and in the comfort of his family on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023. Norman was a loving husband, father, and
grandfather.
Norman was one of the leaders in establishing qualitative research as a genuine way of investigation in the 1960s-80s and has been publishing consistently for years. He edited many books with Yvonna Lincoln including ‘Handbook of qualitative research’ (many editions) that were the bibles of their day in how to do qualitative research. He’s still much in use today.
He is survived by his spouse, Katherine Ryan; two daughters, Johanna Denzin (Steve) and Rachel Denzin (Craig); four grandchildren, Sylvia, Naomi, Max, and Owen; one stepson, Nathan Summers (Karen); and three stepgrandchildren, Katie, Tara and Orion. TASA's Postgraduate Impact and Engagement Award is also open for applications.
This annual award recognises the impact and engagement of a Postgraduate TASA member’s scholarship that is of high social value to Australian society and/or sociology. We invite TASA Postgraduate members to submit an application (or nominate others) for outstanding impact or engagement with sociological scholarship. Nominations are also welcome from supervisors or peers.

New: Responding to crisis and marginalisation: young people, hope, resistance and agency

Conversations around young people and crisis tend to focus on their vulnerability to social crises, or their culpability for them. For example, young people experience hardships like escalating mental health problems, housing instability, and job precarity. At the same time, they’re deemed responsible for ‘anti-social’ problems and crises like street crime, substance use, and discipline issues in schools. But young people don’t all respond the same way to crisis, and often what’s left out of these conversations are their practices of hope and resistance. How do young people respond to crisis, and what can their response tell us about resilience and agency?

New: Developing research partnerships with schools
A workshop for school staff and researchers, presented by The Australian Sociological Association (Sociology of Education Thematic Group)
Hybrid, 6 September 1:00pm - 3:00pm AEST, Sydney
What kinds of social research are of benefit to schools? How can schools make room for research? How can researchers co-design projects with schools to achieve common goals? How can researchers manage institutional barriers, e.g. onerous approvals processes, financial constraints, and time constraints?
Social scientists working on education have always worked productively with schools. However, that is becoming increasingly difficult because of the pressures facing both schools and the research sector. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and school staff to share ideas and experiences, in order to increase understanding and create possibilities for new ways of working together.
Participating researchers work on issues including:
- Educational inequality
- Cultural diversity and schooling
- Impacts of Covid on schooling
- Selective schools and educational segregation
- Transitions to post-school life

| Social Sciences Week (SSW) 2023
4th to the 10th of September.
In case you are not aware, SSW is an annual event that celebrates and showcases the diverse range of social sciences disciplines and research in Australia. ABC Radio National have expressed interest in the week and are keen to explore the program at the end of July to see where they can promote or cover any events.

| TASA Executive seeks to appoint a new editorial team for the Journal of Sociology for the four-year term 2025–2028.
The term of the current editors expires at the end of 2024, although copy for the first issue of 2025 will be organised.
The journal receives financial and administrative assistance from TASA and from the publisher, Sage. Manuscript submission is done online through ScholarOne. All members of the editorial team must be TASA members and ideally will be located within a department of sociology or a School/unit that offers a major sequence of sociology, including doctoral studies. The Executive are willing to consider applications from an editorial team at a single university or a consortia of staff at two or more universities. Such consortia will be required to demonstrate that they have the capability to work effectively across locations. TASA will provide the Managing Editor with a complimentary TASA membership.
Applicants are also required to show that they have institutional support for the management of the journal, and to specify the nature of this support. Selection protocols and application instructions are available via the orange link below. Additional information is available from the TASA President, Alphia Possamai-Inesedy or from the current Editor in Chief, Helen Forbes-Mewett.
Expressions of interest should be emailed to TASA Admin by 9am Monday October 16th, 2023.
| Call for proposals for Special Issue by Guest Editors - Issue 1, 2025
Each year HSR publishes a special issue on a matter of central importance to health sociology and related fields, edited by guest editors. Previous special issues have addressed topics around Indigenous knowledges, violence against women, temporality, posthuman perspectives, trans health, sex tech, COVID-19 and self-tracking.
The Editors of HSR encourage sociologists to submit proposals to develop and edit special issues exploring new ideas and the cutting edge of their field of expertise. We particularly welcome proposals for special issues with a focus on novel empirical domains, theoretical frameworks and/or methodologies in the sociology of health and illness (for example, the intersection of health sociology and climate change).
