Precarious Work Bursary Fund

Applications for TASA 2025 will open in July 2025.

TASA’s Precarious Work Bursary Fund was established in 2018 and is funded by TASA. The bursary aims to support participation at TASA annual conferences by those academics or applied sociologists who find themselves in casual or fixed term work conditions.  Precarious work is defined for these bursaries as non-standard employment characterized by sub-standard work benefits. This broad definition has been further clarified to include the criteria of holding casual positions or a fixed term contract of no more than six months.

The Bursary

The recipient of the bursary will receive:

  • Registration for TASA 2024
  • Travel funding is based on where the recipient resides and the location of the conference. Travel funding for TASA 2024 is: regional WA up to $250, NT up to $1100, SA up to $850, Qld, NSW & Victoria up to $950, Tasmania up to $1000, FNQ up to $650, overseas up to $2500 (dependent on country of residence).
Note, you can apply for a conference bursary if you reside in state the conference is being held in and, if awarded, you would get complimentary registration.

Overseas applicants
In addition to completing the application form, overseas applicants need to address the following criteria:

1) A statement by the applicant made in support of how participating in the conference is going to shape their education/career/sociological understanding.

2) Evidence of an Australian visa application (completed or in progress), if required.

3) Evidence of the cost of travel and other costs involved – including screenshots/itineraries from travel websites indicating the cost of return flights to and from conference venue to applicant’s location.

4) Evidence of association of the applicant with a university/industrial setting AND/OR a recommendation letter by a supervisor or faculty member supporting the applicant’s participation in the conference.

Please note: you will need to take out travel insurance (usually around $20 - $40) if you would like to be reimbursed before the conference.
