President's Welcome
TASA’s mission is to promote sociology and serve sociologists in their work. The work of the Association is framed by the interrelated values of integrity, equity and transformation. It is an organisation committed to all aspects of the discipline, from facilitating the teaching of sociology and sociological research to enhancing the professional development of our members. TASA aims to ensure the contributions and use of sociology are at the centre of public life, social policy and education. Through servicing sociologists in their work, TASA is committed to serving as a platform for transformative, ethical research through our events, publications, engagement with key public issues and the media. We are also committed to growing our connections with sociologists working across our region. Click

Our members: TASA is one of the largest social science associations in Australia. A large percentage of our members are located within the higher education sector, however, an increasing amount have careers outside of Universities. In recent decades, sociology has moved beyond being the domain of sociology departments to become a central component of multi-disciplinary teaching, learning and research. Our academic members are just as likely to be found in schools of business, education, health, criminology or policy as they are in sociology departments. For those based outside of higher education, members increasingly work in government departments, non-profit associations, private industry, social movements, and independent research organisations.
What we offer: TASA provides a range of opportunities for sociologists and all using sociological frameworks to collaborate in ways which enhance their professional development and engagement in intellectual and public life. Communication and information sharing are essential to our organisation. Our new web platform enables members to list employment & scholarship opportunities directly from their membership profile. Thematic Group conveners now have a special convener dashboard that allows them to set up forums & sub-committees for their group members as well as email them directly from within the new site. Members’ continue to have full-text access to over 100 online journals and other great resources. TASA events each year include an annual national conference, public lectures, seminars and workshops. The association also manages a series of publications, including the international peer-reviewed
Journal of Sociology and
Health Sociology Review. We host a weekly eNewsletter used for brief and rapid communication about relevant developments in policy and higher education, latest members’ publications, events and more. We encourage all TASA members to play an active role in all these forums, in whichever way they see fit.
Australian sociologists work across all areas of specialisation in the discipline and actively engage in, and in some cases lead, international debates in sociology. TASA has 26 active thematic groups in key specialisations within our discipline. Joining and participating in thematic groups is a main benefit of being a TASA member.
If you are not already a member of TASA, I invite you to join our vibrant community of sociologists. If you are a member, I urge you to promote the benefits of membership to your colleagues!
