Conference: Emotional Politics Conference

This two-day conference – jointly funded by The Australian Sociological Association (TASA), the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions (CHE), the University of Adelaide, and Flinders University – brought together an interdisciplinary and international group of scholars to explore an important sociological question. What is the relationship between emotions and politics? Conference delegates from across the humanities and social sciences presented empirical and theoretical papers to illuminate the interplay between emotions and politics in all spheres of public and personal life.

Conference: 1st International Conference on Contemporary and Historical Approaches to Emotions (CHAE)
1-7 December 2016, University of Wollongong, Sydney CBD
The 1st International Conference on Contemporary and Historical Approaches to Emotions brought together emotions scholars from around Australia and the world. It attracted submissions from over one hundred emotions researchers working in thirteen different countries (Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Germany, Sweden, Israel, New Zealand, Pakistan, Austria, Canada, India, Ireland and Switzerland), and showcased emotions research from a diverse range of disciplines (sociology, philosophy, politics, law, history, literature, creative arts, media studies and others).
The event was a collaboration between University of Wollongong's Contemporary Emotions Research Network (CERN), the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions (CHE) and TASA SEA.

Workshop: Emotions at Work – Identity, Self and Society
26 June 2015, University of Queensland, Brisbane
Our 2015 workshop focused on emotions and affect in work contexts, theorising, accessing, measuring and conceptualising the affective and emotional dimensions of work. It provided opportunities for researchers to present and discuss the differing conceptualisations of emotion and affect in organisational contexts across sociology and social psychology, as well as other areas of study.

Workshop: Emotions versus Affect

Our 2014 workshop theme was chosen to motivate discourse on affect. While the incorporation of emotion in sociological approaches is increasingly common, the role of affect is still murky territory for many sociologists. Despite adopting the tone of a battle between the two concepts, the array of presentations reaffirmed that both emotion and affect are important dimensions of sociological analysis.

Workshop: Researching Emotion
25-26 July 2013, Flinders University, Adelaide
Our 2013 workshop focused on methodologies and emotions, but also welcomed general papers on the sociology of emotions and affect. The workshop encompassed papers both on methodological aspects of emotions research and on theoretical issues that may arise in researching emotions. It resulted in the publication of two special editions of the top-ranking international journal Emotion Review (2015).

Workshop: Mapping the Terrain
6-7 July 2012, RMIT University, Melbourne
Our first annual workshop showcased the breadth and depth of emotion and affect research in Australia, and facilitating connections between emotions researchers across Australia. Papers were presented over two days and were grouped into a number of themes: producing emotions, theory and method, emotions in social context, and political emotions.
