August & September 2021

Hi everyone,
Hope you are hanging in there through ongoing COVID impacts.

Watch Applied Sociology Seminar presentation
Some of us had the pleasure of attending Dr Catherine Hastings' presentation on her work as an academic and social change agent. She shares her thoughts on applied research with particular interests in homelessness, disadvantage and legal need. Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meoqFNr0VzE

End of year TASA Applied Sociology event

After discussions at our August meeting, we decided to pivot our end of year event to 100% online. Realities of covid restrictions, increased workloads and zoom fatigue converged to a simplified format on a popular topic often revisited in many of our discussions - hope you can attend and enjoy the event!

Co-design and co-production: Challenges and opportunities for sociologists
Save the date: Wednesday 17 November, 11am - 1pm AEST (Qld time)

Co-design is becoming increasingly trendy in social research, and evidence of involving end users in research design is becoming required by certain funding bodies. We ask the curly question of is all co-design equal? What are the indicators that tell us this has been done "right"? Who gets to decide and how? Are there irreconciliable differences between the needs of the neoliberal academic research enterprise and community or can we use our diverse strengths to achieve a common goal?  We investigate some of the real-life issues and rewards of undertaking participatory research methods for applied social change.

Guest speaker: Jayne Malenfant, McGill University, on peer researchers in youth homelessness research.

Applied sociology TG members are invited to submit Expressions of Interest for doing 5-7 min presentations on their own work and how this relates to the event theme. Format of this presentation is up to you - you may wish to choose to use PechaKucha methodology (20 slides, 20 seconds each). Please send entries (Presentation title and short blurb) to sophie.hickey@cdu.edu.au by Friday 8 Oct 2021.

We will then follow these presentations with an inclusive group/panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities for sociologists doing co-design and co-production work.

More details to come.

Cheers
Sophie
