Barbara Prainsack is a professor and Head of Department at the Department of Political Science at the University Vienna, where she also directs the Centre for the Study of Contemporary Solidarity (CeSCoS), and the interdisciplinary Research Platform “Governance of Digital Practices”. Her work explores the social, ethical, and regulatory dimensions of genetic and data-driven practices and technologies in biomedicine and forensics. 
 
Barbara's latest books are:

TASA Tea Times
Heidi Hetz, our Equity and Inclusion Portfolio Leader, will be hosting the next TASA Tea Time on Monday May 2nd, 1:30pm - 2:30pm (WA), 3:00pm - 4:00pm (SA/NT), 3:30pm - 4:30pm (ACT, NSW, Vic., QLD, Tas.).
 
Included in this week's attendees was a member who tuned in from Ukraine, and shared children's drawings of the war (part of a research project), a member who has lived through the back to back flooding in northern NSW and now has COVID, a member in the second year of their PhD who has yet to experience a TASA conference as well as a member who spends more time traveling to and from work (public transport - 7 hours) than they do at work. There were others too. Casual banter, support, advice and fun was exchanged. Professionally hosted by Heidi, TASA Tea Time sessions are a great way to step out of the daily grind and connect with other members in a safe space. 

The Monday May 2nd TASA Tea Time is open to TASA members only, you can register here and the zoom access details will be emailed to you the week before the event.

Thematic Groups

Incoming Conveners

This week, we are introducing you to the conveners of the Teaching Sociology Thematic Group. 
 
The Teaching Sociology TG was established in 2007. The group aims to: 
  • Link Australian sociologists with particular interest in the teaching of sociology;
  • be a contact point for international sociologists with such an interest; and
  • enable sharing of research and ideas around the teaching of sociology.
The incoming conveners are Johanna Garnett and Ricki Spencer.  
 
Dr Johanna Garnett has been a Lecturer in Sociology and Peace Studies at the University of New England – Armidale for 7 years, and is the recipient of a range of awards and commendations for her research and teaching. She is well published for an ECR and has presented her work at national and international conferences. Her research foci include social movements, every day politics, social and environmental justice, political sociology and the Sociology of youth and families. She has extensive fieldwork experience in Myanmar, South-East Asia. Read on...
 
Ricki Spencer is a non-binary person, teacher and researcher, who advocates for safe spaces and best practice policies for queer and gender diverse students and teachers. Ricki is currently studying their masters of education at the University of Melbourne. They have produced many videos for TASA's YouTube Channel in the Media Voices series.

Scope-University of Melbourne Partnership – Younger People in Residential Aged Care (YPIRAC): Towards living a better life
The Scope-University of Melbourne Partnership is seeking casual Research Assistants located across Australia to carry out qualitative fieldwork during August and September 2022.


The research explores the barriers and enablers to reducing the number of young people living in or at risk of entering residential aged care and how these barriers could be addressed across the disability, housing, health, and aged care systems. It also investigates the impact of the Younger People in Residential Aged Care Systems Coordinator Program.

The role involves facilitating focus groups and carrying out interviews, conducted either in-person or via on online platform.

New: Mobilities, Diversity and Multiculturalism Quarterly Seminar Series
On Wednesday 27th of April (12-1pm), the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation at Deakin University is hosting the first of four seminars throughout 2022 as part of a new MDM Quarterly Seminar Series (in person & on zoom).
