TASA Thursday: Social Class and Emotions in Australia
Join us on Thursday 18th July, for this month's TASA Thursday session: Social Class and Emotions in Australia.
This TASA Thursday session brings together three creative academics to speak about their applied research at the intersections of social class and emotion in diverse interest areas: gender, health, and youth.
Sheree will reflect on emotional labour and the sociology of emotions from her research within creative industries, higher education, and gender relations in families/households and entrepreneurship. Bel will explore how drinking alcohol is positioned in relation to the ‘good life fantasies’ by Australian women in different social classes. Steven will present some of his work on class, affects, and feelings from projects on education, hospitality work, and financialisation.
Speakers will present separately, with time for questions and reflections toward the end; with a particular focus on methodological approaches to studying emotions and affect. Together, we hope this TASA Thursday elucidates the relevance of social class in studies of emotion/affect in response to real-world issues emerging from the interplay(s) between public identities, material realities, and private living

Dr Sheree Gregory
Dr Sheree Gregory is thematic group leader of the Sociology of Work, Labour and Economy at TASA, Senior Lecturer in Human Resources and Management, and researcher at the Institution for Culture and Society, Western Sydney University.
Sheree specialises in the study of gender relations, labour and care, inequalities and work in creative industries, and entrepreneurship.
Dr Belinda Lunnay
Dr Belinda Lunnay is a Research Fellow within the Research Centre for Public Health, Equity and Human Flourishing at Torrens University.
Her focus is on the social systems and structures that prevent illness and protect health, with a particular interest in inequity on the basis of social class and gender.
Her research generates translational outcomes for real world improvements, utilising principles of health promotion and community engagement.
Associate Professor Steven Threadgold
Associate Professor Steven Threadgold is Director of the Newcastle Youth Studies Centre at University of Newcastle.
His research monograph Youth, Class, And Everyday Struggles draws on ideas of affective economies, reflexivity and the work of Pierre Bourdieu (and won TASA’s 2020 Raewyn Connell Prize for best first book).
His approach to youth sociology recognises that young people's lives can be shaped by economic forces and by classed symbolic and moral boundaries.
