The Impact of Opportunity: Reflections of a TASA 2024 Bursary Recipient by Kiran Bedi
As a doctoral scholar from India, I am currently in the data analysis phase of my research, aiming to complete my PhD by October 2025. My research centers on the marginalization of the transgender community in Haryana. This work stems from a deep curiosity to understand the lived experiences of those navigating social exclusion, lack of acceptance, and systemic constraints. Using a mixed-method approach, including in-depth interviews and quantitative analysis, I aim to shed light on the socio-cultural and structural barriers that perpetuate their marginalization. Grounded in Postcolonial Theory, Social Exclusion Theory and the SEKN model, my study provides a regional lens on an issue that resonates globally, offering critical insights into the pathways to inclusion.
This was my first TASA conference and the Postgraduate bursary, with the overseas funding component, made it possible for me to come to Australia to attend the event. Participating in TASA 2024 was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. The presentation of paper to an audience of esteemed sociologists and engaging in thought-provoking discussions not only validated my work but also enriched my understanding of the global relevance of the research.
Receiving a TASA bursary was profoundly meaningful and I am deeply grateful. This support reaffirmed the value of my research and empowered me to represent the voices of marginalized communities on an international stage. The career stage workshops, Keynote Lectures, Concurrent sessions helped me in gaining insights and the connections during the conference and the experience will greatly inform the next phases of my research. Personally, it was a deeply enriching experience to engage with a vibrant community of sociologists who are passionate about advancing equity and inclusion. I look forward to staying engaged with TASA’s initiatives and contributing to its mission of promoting meaningful sociological discourse.
