The Impact of Opportunity: Reflections of a TASA 2024 Bursary Recipient by Caitlan McLean
Attending TASA's conference this year brought back memories of the first time I had attended in Melbourne, which was the first time I had presented at a conference. I arrived nervous and left inspired by the people I met as much as by the knowledge shared across the sessions, and TASA2024 provided an equally invigorating experience.
This year in Perth proved even more intensive as I presented two papers and contributed to facilitation of the postgraduate day. Sometimes the most memorable moments arise from disruptions and the unplanned – like technical difficulties leading to an impromptu roundtable and allowing for a different but equally meaningful space for connection and discussion.
Sharing my PhD research with people across diverse fields proved invaluable, both in solidifying some of my thinking and prompting new questions. For many early researchers, presenting can feel daunting, yet I've found these moments (whilst scary) often lead to the most valuable feedback and connections. As I reflect on TASA 2024, I'm most energised by both the in-person exchanges and the prospect of continuing these discussions virtually with this vibrant academic community. I'm grateful to TASA for providing the bursary that made my attendance possible.
